UKF open Karate Competition
Monaghan IRKRS are a new young club building for the future under the direction of Hanshi Patrick McCarthy and his student Seamus Brady. We have a lot of juniors coming up the ranks. From we joined Hanshi McCarthy and the IRKRS certain clubs and organisations have put up barriers to our progression within Ireland. The latest talk blowing in the wind is that we don’t compete.
We as a club believe in the importance of competing for members to progress. We have the experience, as Hanshi Mc Carthy has been a successful international competitor and full contact fighter. Club instructor Seamus Brady has also competed nationally & internationally at the highest level. We strongly endorse the importance of competition, learning the skill, gaining confidence, and facing different aspects within martial arts to over come and progress. Stepping out on the mat, facing fear, keeping control and giving your best is a must for Monaghan Koryu-Uchinadi students.
Thankfully within Ireland we are glad to say there are good organisations out there that are open to everyone and not negative in their thinking. The UKF is one. We entered their open championships recently. The UKF (Ulster Karate Federation) competition was the best-organised competition we have ever attended in Ireland. It was a very high standard on the day with teams & individuals from Ireland, England and Romania taking part. It was well run with every event going ahead on time. Monaghan achieved two gold and two bronze in their first competition as Monaghan KU karate club representing the IRKRS. A special thanks to Columba Mc Laughlin who organised the event. Congratulations to Raymond Shannon and Carol Nelis who's team members placed in almost every event. Your support was much appreciated to us on the day. To our own competitors we say well done but there's a lot to be improved for the future. Keep up the good spirit and attitude. We are proud of every one of our members and your achievements so far.
Over the weekend we travelled down to Sensei Joe Glavin's Shotokan pre-grading classes. We trained from 1.30 to 5.00pm. Joe put us through our paces working on the basics, kata and kumite. Joe sensei then asked me to do some fitness drills with his students to finish off the days training. I done some SAQ (speed, agility, quickness) with ladders, cones and hurdles. My emphasis was on core, quick footwork and explosive movement that can be added to supplement karate training within the club. Everyone liked the concept and different approach.
Thank you Joe and Paul for having me contribute. It's a credit to you that the standard is high within your club. Well done to everybody and good luck for the future. See you all soon.
Shotokan Kata Course. I recently attended a Shotokan course organised by sensei Raymond Shannon (sku) and instructed by Sensei Chico Mbakwe from Wales. You wouldn't think he was in his early fiftys as Chico has some of the best kicks and flexibility I've ever seen. His technique was superb not to mention his open mind and level of experience. He talked the right talk regarding developing skill and mindset in Karate do and the difference between that and none rule bound street confrontation. If you can fully understand how to integrate the two by cross training and developing the over all combat mind and body then a stronger and more prepared individual emerges. I really liked sensei Mbakwe and look forward to training with him again.

His aim is to show that one can train hard, develope strong basics, attitude and skill to compete in modern Kata competition while study, learn and become proficent in the orgional aspects, applications and understanding of Kata & Karate-Do under Hanshi Patrick Mc Carthy. He would be competiting in Kumite aswell but due to a serious injury & medicial advice has had to refrain.
Respectable result for club competitors.
Thirteen students of Teach Na nDaoine Karate club also competed in Kumite and Kata in their respected age and weight categories throughout the day. Best results came with Martin O Reardon winning silver in Kata and Leah Barry winning silver in Kumite. Rebecca Cawley & Alana Mc Kenna won their first couple of fights. Rebecca came third in both Kata & Kumite with Alana placing joint third in her fighting event. All of the Monaghan competitors showed great attitude and team spirit on the day. Quoting from Seamus,” We are building for the future. The next couple of years will be a learning period in what we need to improve and work on if our members wish to compete at the highest level in the future. With the sporting aspect of Karate in Ireland improving so much under the Irish sports council proper coaching procedures and skill development setup there is a very high standard to be reached. Competition for places is high but not out of reach for our students. Dedication, hunger & hard work are what it takes. There is plenty of that in our club.
