5k fundraising walk Having very little funding to rely on to keep our premises open within the community our club committee recently organised a sponsorship walk to raise money. Our committee work on a voluntary basis. With the economy as it is trying to raise money hasn’t got any easier. These funds are much needed to cover club overheads, buy much needed equipment and raise costs for club members to be able to travel and compete in future Karate sporting events. A sizable crowd who support what we do for members of the community turned out for a 5k walk within the grounds of Rossmore Park. The great weather on the day added to the event making our outing enjoyable and a success. We wish to thank everyone who contributed in any way and helped to raise just over 1,300 euro. This goes a long way to ensuring we stay open and keep providing to members both junior and senior for 2011. .JPG?155)

Ten class self defence and fitness training course
A few months back Monaghan Ku karate club were contacted by a local school leader of physical education. Mr George Dugdale Monaghan Collegiate School www.monaghancollegiateschool.ie had heard about our KU karate club and was interested in what we could offer as an alternative to the main sports emphasised through P.E. We jumped at the chance and accepted the challenge. We then sat down and devised a ten class course to be carried out over ten weeks as part of physical education within the school. We decided to intergrate Traditional Karate Practises & self defence applications, along with structure to improve fitness such as mobility exercises, warm up, preparatory, dynamic, maintenance and development stretches, fartlek & interval cardio plus SAQ training. To get the message across of how Traditional Karate Practises relate to & include self defence applications we included learning and using techniques such as blocking, striking, joint locking, seizing and body movement. We then integrated the two together in physical drills striking pads using the tools of the body i.e. hand, feet, elbows, forearms, knees and head. When students were comfortable they then progressed into two person practises using self defence techniques in senarios against confrontation and attack. To run along side the physical participation talks and information leaflets on awareness, avoidance, safety and how self defence can be seen under Irish law were included as part of the course. The ten week program was extremely well received. A huge thank you to Monaghan Collegiate & George Dugdale for the opportunity. The course would not have been a success without the enthusiastic participation of the forth year girls and their teacher Miss Fleming. You were a pleasure to work with. Stay aware and be safe.

Easter Holidays are over. Looking forward to an intense couple of months training and travelling. I hope to pass my final exams receiving my personal health & fitness qualification after two years of attending college on a part time basis. This has been no easy feet as I have been holding down three jobs along with training and directing the Monaghan Karate Club.
I am ecstatic now to have fully established Monaghan Ku Karate under the IRKRS. We are now personal students of Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. He is a master-level instructor who studied and is accredited in Japan by the same group as was Gichin Funakoshi. He has trained with the who’s who of the fighting arts and become a best-selling author based upon his extensive research in Japan [Okinawa], China, and SE Asia. As a former international champion and the head of his own worldwide organisation he is also the person who established the world’s first accredited undergraduate karate instructor’s program. It's a very huge honour to be part of IRKRS and be accredited within it by Hanshi McCarthy. Our club will be grading at the end of June before the summer break. All grades and certs will be processed through the IRKRS and Hanshi McCarthy. All new beginners will now be grading for the first time. Only those who have been in regular attendance will get approval to grade as this is only fair on everyone.
Myself, Sensei Damien Murphy & Joe Galvin are heading the European Gasshuku in June. http://www.koryu-uchinadi.nl/nieuws/44/european-gasshuku-2011/

Former World Champion coaches monthly class. Troy Reneker has been studying the art karate for over 20 years. Born into a very sporting family in the southern suburbs of Sydney, he came to the conclusion very quickly that he was going to dedicate his life to sports achievement. He decided very young that physical fitness was considered one of the most important ingredients in a happy and successful life. Troy was recognised as being one of Australia’s best sports karate fighters and has represented Australia for more than 12 years. He was classified as an elite athlete with the Australian Sports Commission. Troy’s international sports karate career has seen him win 13 medals whilst representing Australia. This is made up of 6 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 Bronze medals for both individual and teams events. He has traveled the world with his sport and has competed in high-level competitions in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, USA, Mexico, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Italy and Greece. He has also trained with some of the best sports karate athletes in the world and so is up-to-date with the latest tactics and strategies.
Troy is curently living full time in Dublin and has set up the Dublin branch of the IRKRS along with Martin Hurley. We are glad to have Troy attending Monaghan on a regular basis to share his knowledge in competative karate competition. It's not every day one gets to train with a world champion.

LL-R; Sensei Mark Smyth, Damien Kearns, Seamus Brady, Paul Bowman, Graham Dyball.
Monaghan instructor Seamus Brady recently attended Grand Master Paul Bowmans first Ireland seminar hosted by sensei Damien Kearns. Sensei Bowman is an expert in pressure point striking which can inhabit the electrical functions and pathways of the body. By doing this one can restrain or stop an attacker to different levels such as blocking body motor function to shuttng down the pathways of the brain causing neurological shutdown. The system can also be used revive the body and aid in the healing processes. He liked two things about the sminar and Kyusho Jitsu system. One the system itself. It does work if ones knowledge of the body and mederian points are up to scratch. Sensei Bowman demonstrated his knowledge and practical know how to a very high standard. Secondly the welcoming attitude and friendly nature of the seminar instructors and course participants. A big thank you to Damien Kearns who runs the Emyvale club for his open mindness and willingness to build links between styles.
Damian Kierans gives a class in pressure point striking. Emyvale instructor and pressure point expert sensei Damian Kierans recently under invitation give a pressure point striking demonstration to our Monaghan club. Damian has been training since a young age around the world with some very high ranked and known martial artists including Grandmasters George Dillman & Paul Bowman. His area of expertise is vital point striking to control or over come an attacker or aggression in violent situations. Having set up his own organisation "The Universal Combat Arts Academy" in Kyusho Jitsu Damian has been building his name and his art with good results throughout Ireland. Being open minded he gladly accepted the chance to come and show his stuff in our Saturday class. He is acceptable of the Monaghan clubs effort to build cooperation and understanding amongst the different martial arts throughout the county. By doing this we all hope to move forward for the future in the spirit of friendship, harmony and respect regardless of style, rank or experience. Thanks to Damian for the high standard of his class and instruction with the knowledge he shared.

Forging links with Monaghan Martial Art styles. Hanshi Mc Carthys Koryu Uchinadi Kempo Jutsu is derived from original practices found in the Ryukyu Islands including Okinawa before the birth of modern day Karate. These Islands are the birth place for a lot of styles throughout the world along with other countries such as China, Asia and Japan. Monaghan Koryu-uchinadi recognises the importance of exploring these links in modern day by cross training.
There is a great variety of styles throughout County Monaghan. By forging links we hope to come together, create friendship and trust, exchange ideas and support each other in the true spirit of the art while achieving our common goals. Over the past few months Monaghan senior instructor Seamus Brady has been training with newly opened Carrick BJJ club. The classes are given by expert Gary Fegan who has a powerful background having honed his skill in places such as Brazil, Thailand, and Australia. He also teaches the Dog Pound JuJitsu club in Newry. There is also Muay Thai, boxing and submission taught on different days. Responsible for arranging the variety of styles is long time coach and practitioner Martin Mc Mahon. Through him and others Carrickmacross kickboxing has produced many champions nationally and internationally in the sporting aspect of the martial arts. We all see the benefit of coming together and building new links now and for the long term future. For any one wanting to learn Ju-Jitsu we can't recommend this club enough. A high standard with lots of dedicated students, experienced and beginner.

Monaghan club welcomes past student.
A pleasant surprise was had by club members as Ruairi Mc Ginnity stopped by to say hello. Ruairi was a valued member in previous times having represented the club in competitions throughout Ireland. Moving to England with his family, supporting his sister who previously won the all Ireland gymnastics and gained a place within the English set up. Ruairi has since settled into Shotokan Karate with the England JKA. He recently came third in their national Kumite championships. No mean feet. This is a testament to the dedication and commitment he has shown to Shotokan Karate from an early age. Well done from the Monaghan club and may your success carry on in the future. You will always be welcome in our club.

Thirty Five Karate-Ka progress to next level.
Juniors and seniors of Monaghan Koryu-Uchinadi/ Shotokan Karate club recently tested for their next belts. Set up in September under former Monaghan Shotokan Karate instructor Seamus Brady the club has been building its foundation in Monaghan and throughout Ireland. The club have Shotokan style as its base so juniors can compete in competitive sports Karate nationally and internationally. For those who do not wish to compete in competition the club have broadened its base to learning and practicing the original old style practices know as Koryu-Uchinadi. This involves self-Defence applications, two person drills, bag & pad work, ground grappling, throws and break falling, plyometric and aerobic training as well as study into self control, gaining confidence, recognising, avoiding or confronting violent confrontation or acts of violence.
Quoting from senior instructor Seamus Brady 3rd Dan Yudansha; Hanshi Patrick Mc Carthy is recognised at the forefront in old style Karate practices throughout the world. Having been attending and learning from Mc Carthy since 1999 with his acceptance I recently registered the Monaghan club to his global organisation The IRKRS. All tests and grades within the club are recognised under Mc Carthy sensei. This is a much sought after recognition as well as giving students in the club lots of variety in all the aspects of Karate-do practices during training. This can only help to improve standard and knowledge to all our members from around the county. Also with parents involved and helping out, our child protection procedures in place, junior classes thought in a team building fun friendly manner and a good hall with heating, a wooden floor plus newly purchased mats and equipment we can provide everything to our members to grow in the practices of Karate in a safe and reassured environment.
Thirty five members from Monaghan achieved their belts including Connell O Rourke who passed and received his black belt. Connell has been training over the last nine years showing great attitude, perseverance, learning ability and commitment to karate-do, his club and his instructors.

Self -Defence for Teenagers. Dohamlet Youth group recently took part in a four week self-defence course presented by senior instructor Seamus Brady. Having heard about previous women's self-defence courses given by Seamus & Fergal Mc Kenna 3rd dan (Smythborough boxing club) they invited Seamus to instruct their youth group. Over four sessions teenagers got to learn about awareness, dealing with fear, the do and don't when heading out and self-protection. In the practical section they got to hit pads using tools of the body (elbows, knees, slapping, kicking, punching & grabbing.) Working in pairs they got to learn and practice defensive themes against habitual acts of violence (grabs, punches, chokes, head butts, & pushes, from front and back) as thought through Patrick Mc Carthy's Koryu-Uchinadi system. As four sessions is really only a introduction to the world of being attacked a lot of emphasis was put on avoiding situations, raising alarm, distracting the attacker, getting help and defending to with in a reasonable and acceptable amount of force. Something total different from what the group were use too enjoyment and excitement was the main atmosphere in the classes. The club wish to include the course as part of their yearly itinerary from now on.

Cross Training with Eric Forsythe. Being open minded and interested in effective defense against street or violent confrontation members of our senior class have been attending Sensei Eric Forsyth Sunday MMA classes. A mixture of kettle bell workouts, grappling, pad work, polymeric drills & sparring. Also confrontation, awareness and defense drills. His classes provide an all around preparedness for dealing with violent attack. A workout both physical & mental Eric's understanding in the reality of real fighting comes through. To do everything to survive you need fitness, physical & mental strength, understanding of adrenalin dumps, control of fear, awareness, knowhow and a will to overcome violence by surprise or directly. This class has it all. His classes are open to like minded people. He is a very approachable Karate-Ka with lots of experience and always looking to improve his own standard. He is also transcending to Hanshi Mc Carthy Koryu Uchinadi. Monaghans Teach Na nDaoine club and Eric's Belfast club hope to forge deeper links over the coming months under Hanshi Mc Carthy.

Teach Na nDaoine Juniors give a Karate demonstration.
Recently Junior Karate-Ka put on a display of Karate Basics, Kata and self-defence applications in Corduff community hall. The event was part of Monaghan community forum in which local community groups, sports clubs & local business advertise what they are all about. On request from the organizers Teach Na nDaoine Karate club hosted a demonstration, puting on an exciting and eye grabbing display. Karate has much to offer towards county Monaghans teenage & youth, from developing good carater, learning awareness and self protection, gaining confidence and personal achievement. All one needs to take the right direction or to take on and over come the challenges life can throw up. Having something to do and excel in is better then walking the streets with temptation lurking. This was our first demo and was received with applause & lots of wos in the air. A job well done to our Junior members.

International competition yields fourteen Medals for Teach Na nDaoine Karate Club
Teach Na nDaoine Karate club, competed recently winning no less then fourteen medals and trophies. More then two hundred competitors from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales contested the International Karate Championships, held in Ardee. With four competition areas and twenty professional referees, the stage was set for explosive and nail biting action. Spectators were in awe at the high standard, skill and close finishes of the semi contact fighting.
In the seniors brown-black section club instructor Seamus Brady3rd Dan and assistant instructor, Francis Mc Caffery 1st Dan Won the team pairs Kata. Beating twelve other teams their timing, focus, awareness, spirit and attitude proved too strong and set the bar for others to reach. They also placed second and third in the individual event. In Kumite, both went out to narrow defeats to international competitors just missing out on medal placing.
U15 white to purple belt, Adrian Cawley produced some of the best fighting of the day. Going into extra time and under a close decision, he placed second, but this could not take away the defencive and attacking skills he displayed in his fights. Only a split second laps defeated him and that is what made the difference. In the brown-black section Oshien Kinsella and Daniel Murphy made it to the top three. Michael Mc Kenna give a good account of himself. These three and are a team for the future. They showed heart, courage, skill and a will to win for themselves and each other. Shane Colten1st Dan U18 brown-black placed third in both Kata and Kumite (semi-contact fighting). These were tuff events as the skill level was high and intense with many entries. It was no mean feat to get a third place and with more work can get to the top in the near future.
Martin O Reardon taking part in his first senior event had a memorable day. Showing a willingness to be stuck in and compete he secured second in Kata. Kumite proved tougher but he held his own and gained valuable experience for future contests.
Teamwork and encouragement for each other stood out among st competitors representing Monaghan. This also spread among Parents who travelled in support leaving a lasting impression on the organizers of the event. Check out our Photo Album Link.

Monaghan Host Renshi Olaf Kray Seminar.
Traditional Karate combating Habitual acts of physical violence.
There are lots ways that someone can be attacked. Being seized, punched, kicked, choked, head butted, pushed to name but a few. These habitual acts of violence have become more common in present day Ireland. Weather in the home, or on the street, during the day or late at night, being attacked can become a reality. There are no rules except to survive and defend within a reasonable amount of force under the eyes of the law. In reality would we know how to defend such attacks?
Well the good news is for every act of physical violence there is a defence. They have been documented and recorded, put together in a system to make them easier to remember and practise, and thanks to pioneering work from people such as Hanshi Patrick Mc Carthy are now being learned by people all over the world. The art of defence against habitual acts of Violence comes under the name Koryu-Uchinadi or Bunkai (Kata Application) and can be found in traditional Karate. Monaghan Karate Instructors Fergal Mc Kenna3rd Dan and Seamus Brady3rd Dan recently invited Renshi Olaf Kray to present a seminar on these techniques to Karate instructors from Armagh, Galway, Down, Dublin, Mayo and Monaghan. Instructors also travelled from England and Belgium such is the interest in the Koryu- Uchinadi and learning these techniques.
Working in pairs, one attacking and one defending, different scenarios of violence were worked on. Escaping from neck holds, wrist arm leg and hair grabs, being kicked punched slapped or seized from front, back or side, took to the ground, or dragged can all be countered by impacting, body movement, joint locking and attacking vulnerable parts of the body structure. Practising these movements in the two person drills was as near to being attacked as you could get bringing satisfaction and a few open eyes from around the karate seminar. A big thank you goes out to Renshi Olaf Kray for sharing his insight and knowledge on these practises. We were highly impressed and shall have you back in the near future.
