I'd like to thank Hanshi McCarthy for the opportunity to grow and keep our journey alive within Karate. I've been away to Shotokan weeks like this in the past. In a lot of ways everything is much the same regarding the etequiet and camaraderie. I see a lot of positives in that. What puts Hanshi Mc Carthy's/Koryu Uchinadi's/IRKRS growing movement ahead is the openness, willingness to share, and deep knowledge of traditional practises. If we loose focus of that it can become about me and no different to what others are doing. My own opinion would be to avoid this we need to try and grow/focus inwardly while promoting and growing what makes us better outwardly. This is why so many people enjoy the spiritual aspects of Karate along side the physical. It can be difficult to grasp. In my mind it is much easier to understand through experience, been open minded, cross training, reflexion and asking the questions most dont like asking.
On a final note I have to say that Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu is the best all around Traditional Martial Art out there that I have seen. I've done Shotokan, boxing, jujitsu, MMA, Wado, kickboxing, Kyusho Jitsu & Krav Maga. Noting else comes close in my opinion. It has variety, health and healing benefits, realistic applications that I'd happily take to door security, confrontation, fighting competitive/none rule bound scenarios, Traditional etiquette for self respect and respect of others within the dojo and out in every day life. I think the most important part is the way Hanshi McCarthy has devised a modern system incorporating old style origional practises and the history sourrounding that from his many years of research and practise of the art. I count myself very lucky to be around at a time when it is growing and seeing it happen while being a part of it. That's down to McCarthy sensei and his quality instructors who make it happen. It's an honour to have graded to Shodan which made my week and give me huge inwardly satisfaction. Thanks to Damien Costello, Damien Murphy, Joe Galvin and everyone at the Gasshuku who are mates for life now through the practice and discovery of Karate.
Hanshi Mc Carthy delivers seminar for Monaghan KU Karate Club.
Martial art styles from around the county and further afield came together on Sunday last to practice and better understand the one original common principle that unites them all, self-defence. Monaghan KU karate club who organised the event were delighted at the turn out and support shown from different styles including Shotokan, Wado, Kyusho Jitsu and Muay ken san. Participants travelled from Cork, Galway, Dublin, Wicklow, Belfast and Newcastle including people involved with security, personal safety and the fighting arts.
As part of his six month world tour full time professional, martial arts writer, researcher and practitioner Hanshi Patrick Mc Carthy started the seminar by explaining the origins of the traditional fighting arts before the advent of rule bound sport karate and the growing and separation of different styles. Once finished explaining the history the practical action got underway. This included two person Tegumi drills with one person attacking and the other defending. The templates to which these drills work from are based around the documented habitual acts of physical violence (HAPV). Being grabbed or pushed, impacted, joint locked, from front or back in stand up or on the ground. The seminar also covered some of the lost traditional Karate practices including escape and counters if having to defend on the ground. As being attacked can happen to anybody juniors and seniors were allowed to participate in the action in separate groups.
After six hours of self defence separated by lunch, Mc Carthy then explained the different aerobic and anaerobic energy systems used by the body in training, the function of original cool down and stretching drills put together to help the body to recover adding to better health both mentally and physically.
A special thanks to Damian Kearns for lending his floor mats, Damien Walker, Damien Costello, Damien Murphy, Eric Forsythe, Paul Allen, Troy Reneker and Joe Galvin. Our club also wishes to thank everyone who supported and helped in any way.

Seamus & Eric working Koryu-Uchinadi In preparation for Hanshi Mc Carthy Ireland seminar 2010, Teach NA nDaoine instructor Seamus Brady & Belfast instructor Eric Forsythe have been getting together, working on Kata application, two person drills, KU kata, ground application and defensive applications researched and taught around the world by Patrick Mc Carthy. Koryu-Uchinadi has everything from seizing, joint locks, chokes, impacting, ground grappling, throws & attacking venerable parts of the body not protected by the skeletal structure. It is based purely on the orgional aspects of Karate-Do for self-defence in a no rules being attacked senario. It is not a competitive based sport but a very realistic system of surviving, controlling and overcoming a violent confrontation where ever attacked. Mainly for adults Koryu-Uchinadi is for begginner or experienced. Also Koryu-Uchinadi classes builds strenght (mental & physical), confidence, self awareness & fitness. Seamus & Eric under the guidance of Patrick Mc Carthy are now giving classes to any one interested in Kata application, Orgional function & purpous of Karate, and welcome any enquries.
