Incoperating old style practices in a new way.
This weekend, the 3rd out of a series of IRKRS Monthly Classes were held in Monaghan Koryu-Uchinadi, Ireland, featuring Renshi-level instructor Olaf Krey. The classes are an initiative by Sensei Seamus Brady. After a brisk warming up covering basic punching (tsuki), kicking (keri) and  throwing (nage) techniques the emphasis was on entry- level (Nyumon) drills including tsuki waza, heishu waza, kaishu waza and taisabaki oyo waza. Although the ‘classes’ are set up primarily for the members of the Monaghan Club IRKRS members are welcome to attend. A big thanks to Renshi Olaf Krey for delivering the class.

Nice to see to see many familiar faces and to meet new people!
Hope to see you all again in the New Year.

Monthly getogether is Growing.
Course two recently took place at the end of October with Olaf Kray sensei traveling from Germany to instruct. The reaction was very positive from September. Numbers were up/ standard and technique has improved with interest growing from around Ireland.
Members traveled from Cork, Galway, Belfast, Dublin and Monaghan. The theme of the monthly get together is to focus on the techniques and basics of Koryu Uchinadi and then add in the self defence applications of reality based karate hidden within the templates of Kata. A tuff but rewarding two day training course was enjoyed by all members. We look forward to part three at the end of November.

Renshi Olaf Kray Seminar
Monaghan Koryu Uchinadi Karate club hosted German instructor Renshi Olaf Kray over the weekend. The class was attended by Monaghan members Junior & Senior on Friday night. Renshi Olaf Kray is building a reputation towards being one of the best all around traditional Karate instructors within Europe. He is a graduate of Australia’s martial arts collage accredited program set up by martial arts expert Patrick Mc Carthy.  The classes included impacting pads using knees, elbows, fists, open hands and the feet. Members then paired up using two people self defence drills covering attacks from grabbing, choking, joint locks, head butts and strikes from all angles. The last thirty minutes were spent working on modern SAQ fitness drills plus static stretches introduced by fitness instructor and club coach Seamus Brady to run alongside and compliment the traditional art within the club. The new equipment is HSE funded due the club training been recognised as very positive towards building health, fitness and wellbeing within the local community for all ages.

Saturday was open to all IRKRS members who travelled from around Ireland to the course. Four hours were spent on practicing technique to create power, dynamic stretching for mobility and pad impacting using striking and kicking techniques. The club have also recently introduced Bojutsu. This is an ancient traditional practice using wooden staff.  Bojutsu is known for building natural upper body strength, forearm and wrist flexibility plus good hand eye coordination. The art is something very different but enjoyable and fulfilling. A great weekend was had by all who attended. Special thanks to Teach Na Ndaoine resource centre for the venue and support. Olaf Kray will be returning at the end of October and November.
